Each box holds 22 by 8 by 6 in of soil and carries up to 33 lbs, so eight separate species can grow at once, each with its own box, without any of them competing for the same root space. Stacking them 59 in high means all of that growing happens over an area a single wide bed would use for two rows, which is why it suits small balconies and tight corners where floor space is the constraint rather than sunlight. The ladder structure is doing more than holding the boxes up. Setting each tier back from the one below it opens the face of the unit, so air flows between the boxes rather than stagnating in a solid stack, and every plant gets sunlight exposure instead of the lower ones sitting in permanent shadow. Selected fir wood forms the boxes and frame, solid stock chosen for its resistance to deforming under the weight of wet soil. A water-based painting protects it and extends the lifespan without the heavy film a solvent finish leaves. Holding it all square are tightly fastened screws and reinforced crossbars, which matter more on an eight-tier frame than a low one since a tall structure carries its load higher. Assembled it weighs 39 lbs before filling.
