Contoured rather than flat, these plates were shaped to follow a chest and a back instead of arguing with them. They drop into a plate carrier and sit close, which is what stops a loaded ruck from turning into a shifting, slapping nuisance somewhere in the second mile. Solid steel means the mass arrives in a thin package that leaves the carrier fitting as it should.
