Safety hinges are the detail that decides whether a storage chest with a lid is suitable for a home with children. A plain hinged lid falls under its own weight, and a heavy board dropping onto small fingers is the accident this piece is designed to prevent. Two hinges hold the lid wherever it is opened to. The top is rated to 300 lb, which means the chest doubles as a bench. At the foot of a bed, in an entryway, or against a hallway wall it becomes somewhere to sit while dealing with shoes, and that rating is well beyond what any seated adult requires. The hidden compartment underneath is rated to 300 lb as well, which is a large figure for an enclosed chest and covers bedding, toys, tools, or seasonal clothing. The chest measures 29.9 in wide by 15.7 in deep and stands 18.9 in tall, which is bench height on a compact footprint. Particleboard construction brings the assembled weight to 28.6 lb, solid enough to stay completely still when somebody sits down on it.
